POLICE REPORT: Woman sold mother's house to buy liquor license, police say

SARASOTA - Authorities say a Sarasota woman sold her mother's house without her permission and used the proceeds to buy a liquor license for a biker bar.
Jody Bedard is the legal guardian, nurse and caretaker for her 81-year-old mother, who has Alzheimer's disease, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. Bedard, 51, sold her mother's home for a little more than $190,000.
Bedard took $180,000 of that money and lent it to her romantic partner, who was in a partnership with Will's Honkytonk Bar at 5748 Swift Road, according to an arrest report.
The report said Bedard's partner and the owner of the bar used the money to buy a liquor license and wrote up a handwritten agreement -- which stated their intentions of getting legal documentation eventually -- that would pay back Bedard's mother over a period of five years, with interest. But the mother had no knowledge of the arrangement and was not party to it, deputies said.
If the bar were to fold, the liquor license would be sold and the money given back to Bedard's mother, the handwritten agreement said, according to the report.
Bedard was charged with exploitation of an elderly person.
